Develop or Strengthen Your Prayer Life

Hello!!
As promised, here a link to an article that I found helpful for developing and strengthening your prayer life. The bible commands us to pray without ceasing but that can be quite challenging for those of us that lead busy lives. Even more so for young adults that have young kids, more than one job or are active in church. However, we must remember that prayer is a crucial element of our faith and walk with God. Just like we make time to eat, we must make time to pray. Yes it that's important! This article presents some pratical ways for praying consistently and daily. Read it when you can, it's short so it won't take long! I also included a summary. Let me know it's helpful to you.

Stand to Reason: 10 Tips to Help Your Prayer Life

1. Choose a specific place to pray.
2. Pray at the same time every day.
3. Pray out loud.
4. Keep a note pad handy.
5. Make a list to keep track of your prayer needs.
6. Redeem time for praying out of unused corners of your schedule.
7. Change the pace during your prayer time.
8. Keep a prayer journal.
9. Pray with someone else.
10. Pray one-sentence prayers.

XOXO,
Metina

Forgive and Forget

Lately the word "forgiveness" has been on my mind. It seemed like in some way or another my conversations, readings and thoughts relate to forgiveness. A friend called me last week because she was having a hard time forgiving herself for something she had done. A few days later, I listened to a sermon by Bishop T.D. Jakes on forgiveness. The next day I read a devotional that talked about forgiveness. Later I began asking God what scripture I should read for The Casting Call. I was thinking that it would be most appropriate to read verses relating to prayer. After all this was a prayer line. But God had another idea. He led me to Isaiah 43.

I first read verse 25. Here God says that He's blotting or your mistakes and wrong doings and that He will forget all about them. How awesome is that?! Then I thought of something, if we are to have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16) then shouldn’t we apply this principle in our own lives? Even in situations where we need to forgive ourselves. As I read on, “for my own sake” caught my attention. What did God mean by this? I studied more and learned that here God is saying I forgive your sins not because you deserve it or by your own merit or even to make you happy, but to demonstrate my love, mercy and compassion. Yes, His unmerited grace. One commentary suggested that this was evidence of God’s great character. It’s really not about the other person or us in this case. Consider that for a moment. Our forgiveness of other people is not about them or for them. It’s for us. It’s for our growth, development and even freedom.

Then I was directed to Isaiah 43:18-19. Here God says don’t even look back. It’s done. You’re forgiven. Now move forward. It’s hard to do because we tend to focus on past hurts and the mistakes we’ve made, especially when we see the results of our errors today. But in verse 18 God is saying don’t dwell on the past. He tells us that He wants to do a new thing in our lives (v. 19). I like how The Message bible puts it – “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand new”. Hallelujah! I love that! He says to be present. Yesterday is gone. Then God asks “don’t you see it?” Think about that. That suggests to me that if we aren’t present we can miss this new thing. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to miss anything God has for me! I’ll admit, it’s not easy to just move on but it’s necessary. Reading on in Isaiah 43, God says that He’ll make a way for you. Just ask Him. Then let Him do it.

Ok, so now you may be thinking that sounds good but how do I move forward. It’s not as simple as saying “I forgive you” or “I did wrong but I forgive myself”. I’ve said that but the pain and hurt is still present. So what do I do? Bishop Jakes mentioned this in his sermon, whatever controls you is your master. That includes unforgiveness. Consider that and read Matt. 6:24. Next, understand that it’s ok to be hurt, sad, angry and whatever else you’re feeling. You can cry about it if you need too. Face your emotions instead of ignoring or suppressing them. But when you’re done, focus on the lesson you are to learn.  Don’t miss the lesson. Then realize that you’re a better person today because of your yesterday. Finally, understand that God sets the standard for how we are to live and act. So don’t concern yourself with another person’s opinion or expectation of you. Remember the saying “they don’t have a heaven or hell to put you in”? That’s right. Only our God can do that and He says “I love you and I forgive you”. Decide today to free yourself from people. Finally, when negative thoughts enter your mind, counter them with the word of God. Say and do the following:
1.       I am forgiven. 1 John 1:9
2.       I am fearfully & wonderfully made. Ps. 139:14
3.       God’s love for me is unconditional and never-ending. Eph. 2:4-5; Jer. 31:3; Ps. 136:26
4.       Pray to God and ask Him to restore your control of your thoughts. He promises to be there when we call Him. Is. 26:3
5.       Read His word. Ps.1:2

Then focus on positive things. I hope this helps. If you don’t get it at first, relax and try it again. Forgiveness is a process. I hope this helps! Let me know your thoughts.

Love ya much!!

To God Be All The Glory!!

This morning's prayer call was awesome! Apostle Dawn Burrell of New Creations Christian Church and Ministries led a powerful prayer and Minister Kevin Harris of St. Stephen Baptist Church blessed us with devotion. Min. Harris discussed John 21:1-6 and titled the devotion "His Promise, His Patience and our Purpose". I'll try to post my notes tomorrow. Today I want to share a valuable lesson that I learned this morning. It's just too good to keep to myself.

Because I am a perfectionist, I get frustrated when things don't go as planned, especially when it pertains to something as important as this prayer call. In addition to the technical difficulties, one of the participants was really sick and another participant was unable to call in. It seemed as though everything was going wrong. But as soon as Apostle Burrell began to pray, I remembered what another minister told me the night before. This prayer call may have just started but it has the potential to reach a lot of souls and bless a lot of believers. I am well aware of this but guess what - so is the devil. He has his eyes set on ministries (and people!) that have the potential and power to bring more souls to Christ and strengthen personal relationships with God. Knowing this I shouldn't be frustrated. Instead I should be grateful and excited. I don't have to worry about Satan or his schemes because the bible tells us that we have power over the enemy (Luke 10) and that Satan is defeated. That's already done. Our Lord and Savior took care of that a long time ago. So our job today is to give Him all the glory, despite the enemy's tactics. While systems may not work, lines may be down, participants may be sick, prayer will still go forth and praises will still go up. God will still get all the Glory!

Remember this thought throughout the week. You will be amazed at how much just changing your perspective can change your situation. So give it a try. Then give God all the glory and come back and tell us about it here!!!

My Soul Thirsts for God - Psalm 42

Hopefully you were able to participate in the prayer call this week. It was such a blessing!! Dr. Trenace Richardson of Zion Church was the facilitator. Before prayer, she began a devotion that focused on Psalm 42, verses 1-5.

In this scripture, the Psalmist likens his thirst for God to that of a deer panting for water. In verse two he says "my soul thirsts for God". Dr. Richardson shared two personal declarations to maintain her soul's thirst for God.

1. My soul thirsts for what I need, not for what I want.
She says that we should be so desperate for God that nothing else will satisfy us. We should be so desperate that we begin to spend more time in prayer, more time in devotion, and more time reading His word. That desperation will encourage us to follow God's lead  in every area of our life.

2. My soul thirsts for His presence, not just His presents.
Dr. Richardson declared that her soul desires to bask in the very presence of God. When in His presence we don't have to wonder if God is there, we know it and can feel it. Furthermore, the presence of God is more than enough for us. Our soul is satisfied even if God isn't giving us a gift or a present. We would still express our sincerest gratitude just because God has graced us with His presence. When our soul thirsts for God, we grow from asking God for "things" every time we pray to just being grateful to be in His presence.

How great is that? Take a few moments today to just meditate on this devotion. What are your thoughts? Post them here!

Welcome!

Thank you for joining The Casting Call! I am so excited about what God is doing and I hope that you are too!!

The Bible instructs us to pray without ceasing and in these days and times the need for prayer is so evident. Of course one on one time with our King is essential to our very existence but one cannot overlook the benefits of group prayer. I think one of the greatest benefits is hearing that others are facing challenges in life, just like I am. As difficult as these challenges are for me, so it is with others. Prayer is personal and we don't always get to see another person's vulnerability like we do during prayer. Group prayer allows you to see and hear your brothers and sisters unguarded. You can hear their cries as well as their praises. That to me is amazing and lets me know that I am not alone. Another benefit is witnessing an answered prayer. Not only can you rejoice with your brother or sister, but you can be assured that your answer is on its way. Hallelujah! How awesome is that? The benefits are endless but I'll share one more. Group prayer has incited a strong desire to strengthen my own prayer regimen. It has shown me how to pray, encouraged me to pray more and has given me the assurance that God is there and He cares.

There are many scriptures supporting corporate prayer and I've listed some of them below. Please read them when you can. If you haven't already, give group prayer a try. I promise you will be blessed. Be sure to stop by our blog and let us know how you've been blessed by corporate prayer - especially if it's The Casting Call!!
